Trainer Mick Kent and jockey Brad Rawiller combined to win their second consecutive Ballarat Cup on Sunday when Domesky overhauled Rothera to take the country Victorian feature.

Kent and Rawiller won the 2200m Listed race with My Bentley in 2010 and this year’s running was a welcome return to the winners’ list for the talented Domesky.

The four-year-old was found wanting when he beat just two horses home in the Caulfield Cup but Kent decided not to give up on him.

“He didn’t have much luck early in his preparation and might have been out of his depth in the Caulfield Cup,” Kent said.

“He’s a backmarker and needs the heat on up front which he got today.

“His owners have been long suffering. We’ve been to Sydney and everywhere with him and it’s great to get a result.”

After his Caulfield Cup failure, Domesky ran second in a 2000m race at Flemington on November 5 with Rawiller’s brother Nash aboard.

“Mick has been a great supporter of mine and given me so many winners,” Rawiller said.

“It’s a tremendous training effort and it’s great to win a country Cup like the Ballarat Cup.

“I’m glad Nash couldn’t be here today.”

Domesky ($6.50) beat Rothera ($7.50) by three-quarters of a length with Sean Baile Mor ($21) a short neck third.

Favourite Paddy O’Reilly ($5) weakened to finish last after being posted wide while Tinseltown was pulled out of the race by Michael Walker after stumbling on the first turn.

The Ballarat Cup meeting officially brings the Victorian spring carnival to an end.
